Buccaneer is a french term that was used in the 17th century in the Caribbean Islands to refer to pirates who attacked Spanish shipping, the name comes from the word buccan, a wood frame used to smoke meat and the french name is boucan and the french hunters were boucaniers, in english it became buccaneers, conflict with Spanish forces from east Hispaniola drove the buccaneers from the mainland to the island of Tortuga, here, they turned to piracy against Spanish shipping, and english settlers occupying Jamaica began to spread the name with the meaning of pirates or privateers.
